The Seinfeld Scholar Award honors outstanding faculty and students. The award was created through an endowment from Syracuse University alumna and Board of Trustees member Judith Greenberg Seinfeld ’56 to honor Chancellor Emeritus Kenneth A. Shaw and Mary Ann Shaw for their years of service to the University.
The award is intended not as a prize for past accomplishments, but to highlight excellence, creativity and innovation, and to encourage future contributions to society. The program recognizes individuals who have:
- Made an outstanding contribution to the “beauty of the world” and “added to human values and ending human abuse.”
- A passion for creativity, excellence and originality in artistic or academic fields.
- Demonstrated an “ability to motivate and bring out the best in others.”
Award Details
The Seinfeld Scholar Award operates on a three-year cycle. During the first and second years, a single faculty member receives the award. In the third year, two graduating seniors are selected. Faculty members receive $10,000, and students receive $5,000 each. There are no restrictions on use of the funds, nor is a report on the use of the funds required. Ms. Seinfeld may occasionally change the cycle.
Nomination Process
Deans, associate deans, department chairs, school directors or program directors may nominate faculty or students for the award. Self-nominations are not allowed. Nominators are encouraged to collaborate with colleagues and submit a single nomination letter.
The nomination package, which must be submitted as a single PDF, includes a coversheet, a formal nomination letter and a CV (short version).
Nominations for the Seinfeld Award are due in January.
