The Chancellor’s Citation for Excellence recognizes members of the campus community who have made invaluable contributions to Syracuse University through commitment to scholarship, creative work and/or research that contributes to new understandings of the world and creative responses to its needs, and by advancing the Chancellor’s four pillars of excellence:
- Providing an outstanding undergraduate experience
- Empowering research excellence
- Fostering change and innovation
- Positioning Syracuse as the best university in the world for veterans
Awards are given in four categories:
Award for Faculty Excellence and Scholarly Distinction (2 faculty): Given to faculty members whose work exhibits intellectual richness, has the potential for future impact and offers possibilities for collaboration both inside and outside the University.
Selection criteria:
- Commitment to scholarship, research or creative work that offers new understandings of the world
- Evidence of advancing the Chancellor’s four pillars of excellence
- Potential impact of research, creative work or scholarship
- Potential for collaboration and engagement around research or creative work within the University and/or in partnership with others
- Commitment to University mission: academic excellence at a campus welcoming to all
Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Student Experience and University Initiatives (1 faculty, 1 professional staff, 1 support staff): Given to faculty and staff who enhance the undergraduate experience for students or make invaluable contributions to supporting and advancing the University’s mission and goals.
Selection criteria:
- Evidence of advancing the Chancellor’s four pillars of excellence
- Evidence of enhancing the student experience or supporting and advancing the University’s mission and goals
- Commitment to University mission: academic excellence at a university welcoming to all
Award for Excellence in Student Research (1 graduate student, 1 undergraduate student): Given to students who have engaged in collaborative research that has the potential to make a deep and lasting impact on greater society.
Selection criteria:
- Evidence of advancing the Chancellor’s four pillars of excellence
- Evidence of strong scholarship, research or creative work that offers new understandings of the world
- Future impact potential of research or creative work
- Commitment to University mission: academic excellence at a campus welcoming to all
Lifetime Achievement Award (1 faculty): Given to a faculty member who, over the arc of his or her career at the University and beyond, has made extraordinary contributions to broadly advancing the Chancellor’s four pillars of excellence: providing an outstanding undergraduate experience; empowering research excellence; fostering change and innovation; and positioning Syracuse as the best university in the world for veterans.
Selection criteria:
- Evidence of advancing the Chancellor’s four pillars of excellence
- Cumulative excellence
- Commitment to University mission: academic excellence in a campus welcoming to all
Nominations
Complete instructions for nominating an individual for a Chancellor’s Citation are outlined on the Chancellor’s Citation for Excellence Nomination Coversheet.
Faculty and staff may be nominated by any member of the University community, including alumni. Students must be nominated by a faculty member. Self-nominations are not allowed.
Nominations for the Chancellor’s Citation are due in January.
Selection Process and Recognition
A committee of faculty, staff and students reviews nominations and forwards recommendations to the Chancellor, who makes the final selections. The awards are presented at the One University Awards Ceremony in April.
