Faculty Development

The Office of Faculty Affairs provides a wide range of programs, resources and opportunities to help Syracuse faculty members navigate all stages of their career.

For New Faculty

  • New Faculty Orientation – Includes key onboarding steps; a signature event, the New Faculty Welcome (a full-day program held the Wednesday before fall classes begin); resources in Blackboard; and events offered as the “Launch” series (see next).
  • Launch — A series of workshops for full-time faculty in their first year (new) through their first reappointment (newish). Topics include getting to know University resources, long term career success, preparing for reviews, and wellness and work-life balance to name a few.
  • Syracuse Passport Program —Teams of at least three explore the food, sights and activities around Syracuse, then report back to the Office of Faculty Affairs to win prizes.

For Tenure-Track Faculty

  • Promotion and Tenure 101 – Offered in conjunction with the Launch series but specifically geared toward tenure-track faculty. Offered every semester.
  • FAB (“Form A or Bust!”) — For tenure-track faculty between reappointment and tenure review. Includes a peer support network, in-person meetups with recently tenured faculty, and resources tailored to what faculty say they need.

For Associate Professors

Mentoring for Associate Professors (MAP) – Supporting the Path to Full Professor has three different options:

  • MAP Light — For faculty who have recently earned tenure and promotion to Associate Professor. Sessions throughout the academic year offer practical guidance on how to think about the next step, from balancing new service expectations to maintaining research momentum.
  • MAP Maintaining Momentum (MM) — For associate professors nearly ready to submit their promotion dossiers. A semester-long program meeting every 3–4 weeks in the fall to finalize their narrative and strengthen their case for promotion.
  • MAP Re-energizing Focus (RF) — For associate professors still defining their promotion timeline or reconsidering how to position their academic work. A yearlong program meeting monthly to help reassess priorities and lay the groundwork for a strong promotion dossier.

For Teaching Professors

  • Reappointment and Promotion 101: opportunities to learn about contract renewal and promotion processes associated with the teaching professor role. Led with representatives from the schools and colleges; offered in conjunction with the Launch series but specifically geared toward teaching professors. Offered yearly.
  • Targeted workshops support year-round success casual get-togethers with peers navigating similar roles.

For Professors of Practice

  • Workshops, networking opportunities and professional development resources strengthen teaching, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, and keep faculty engaged with evolving industry trends.

For Academic Leaders

  • ACC Academic Leaders Network – Five participants per year are chosen to represent the University as participants in a signature leadership development program.
  • Associate Deans – Semi-annual retreats and periodic opportunities to develop leadership perspectives and skills alongside community building.
  • Chairs and Directors – includes two distinct offerings:
    • (Summer) Camp –  A two-day immersive workshop at the start of the year for academic unit leaders (department chairs and school directors). A mid-year camp “reunion” also provides chairs and directors with an opportunity for “deeper dives” into important leadership skills and University priorities.
    • Leader Meet Ups – a monthly opportunity for chairs and directors to get leadership tips, share perspectives, and learn about important University initiatives.
  • ATL@S (Academy for Transformational Leadership at Syracuse) -— For emerging leaders in higher education ready to deepen their leadership capacity. Interactive workshops, reflection and peer engagement help participants clarify their values, build decision-making and collaboration skills, and grow a lasting network of peers.
