Associate Professors

Mentoring for Associate Professors (MAP): Supporting the Path to Full Professor

The Office of Faculty Affairs offers two separate streams of professional development for associate professors as they prepare for promotion to full professor. Each program meets participants where they are in the process and provides structured guidance and peer support.

Re-energizing Focus (MAP–RF)

Best for: Associate professors who are still defining their promotion timeline or determining how to best position their academic work.

Program Overview: MAP-RF is a yearlong program that meets monthly during the academic year. It provides a supportive space to step back, reassess and refocus efforts toward long-term promotion goals.

Key Features:

  • Clarify promotion criteria and expectations
  • Reconnect with professional and disciplinary networks
  • Prioritize research, creative work, and external funding
  • Lay the foundation for a strong promotion dossier

By the end of the program: Participants will have a clear strategy for preparing their dossiers and a plan for aligning their professional activities with promotion goals.

Next step: MAP-RF alumni are encouraged to apply for Maintaining Momentum (MAP-MM) to continue building momentum toward submission.

Maintaining Momentum (MAP-MM)

Best for: Associate professors who are nearly ready to submit their promotion dossiers and need modest additional support to complete the process.

Program Overview: MAP-MM is a semester-long program that meets every 3–4 weeks in the fall semester. It provides focused guidance to help participants finish assembling their dossiers and deepen their understanding of what makes a strong case for promotion.

Key Features:

  • Clarify the narrative through-line across scholarship, teaching and service
  • Understand key components of a compelling dossier
  • Strategize final steps toward promotion

By the end of the program: Participants will have identified and refined the most important elements of their dossier and made meaningful progress toward submission.
